This recipe was requested by a reader! Hi!
Aaah tofu, one of those things that take one poorly prepared meal, for you to hate it forever. Personally, I love it, and luckily for me, my boyfriend does as well, but only if it’s prepared well. Along with my vegan journey, I’ve tried tofu from a couple of places, and it’s always a hit or miss; definitely more misses than hits. My requirements? for Crispy and well seasoned.
Most people would find tofu to be bland, and they’re not wrong, but I see blandness as an advantage. Think about it this way, tofu is essentially tasteless, which means it can carry any flavor we want, making it a super versatile ingredient. It can also be cooked in multiple ways, usually, I pan-fried it, but it can also be baked, fried and drum roll, please… AIR FRIED! Just make sure that it’s organic.
Today I am going to share a very simple Crispy Teriyaki Tofu recipe, but it does take a little preparation time. And I may have tweaked the sauce a little, because, here’s the thing about teriyaki: It’s sweet, like really sweet. I don’t think I realized how much sugar typically goes into teriyaki until I googled a traditional recipe. I knew that I had to tweak the sauce, which is why for this recipe I used coconut sugar—which is still sugar, but it’s unrefined sugar. And I also added sriracha, because we’ve succumbed into the craze.
How to: First, I placed the tofu on a towel-lined plate, then wrapped it with a paper towel and topped it with a heavy item; this is to press the excess liquid, for about 20 minutes. Then I cut the tofu into the desired shape, and lightly breaded the tofu, to make sure that we get the crispiest tofu. I proceed to place the breaded tofu into the air fryer. Whitelist the tofu was cooking I started preparing the sauce in a pan, and when it thickens up I mixed in the tofu. Then I served it with a brown rice & quinoa stir-fry, which ended up pairing perfectly.

- ½ cup rice wine vinegar

- After the tofu block is pressed, cut into the desired shape.
- Gently roll the tofu pieces on the breading, until all sides are coated.
- For air fryer: Immediately place the tofu pieces in the air fryer, and cook for 15 minutes at 320 F, or until golden.
- For baking: Preheat the oven to 425 F. Spread the tofu onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, and bake for 45-50 minutes, flipping all pieces halfway through the cooking time.
- While the tofu is cooking, add all of the sauce ingredients to a pan and whisk together, until it thickens up.
- Add the crispy tofu into the sauce, and stir around until completely covered.
- Serve with your favorite side dish, and enjoy!
