I’m Karla, a vegan food blogger who spends her days creating content for an agency and preparing delicious vegan recipes in my kitchen in Puerto Rico.
Hi there!
My name is Karla and I am a 27-year-old, wild-hearted creator who spends her days between creating content for a marketing agency and preparing delicious vegan recipes in my kitchen in Puerto Rico. Here I live with my family and our 2 dogs; one Shih Tzu (Barbara) and one rescue (Penny) who looks a lot like a lab.
Cooking, creating, and inspiring others are my biggest driving force. This means a life full of good vegan food (healthy or not), movement, good music, time with friends/family, photography, and creativity through different outlets. I’m a lover of vegan food, photography, traveling, dark chocolate and good beer! This blog is my outlet to explore all these things at once.
My search for creativity through different outlets is what led me to start VeggieJeva in the early summer of 2017 and become a Vegan Blogger in Puerto Rico; without having much experience of creating recipes or photographing food. I first stopped eating red meat back in 2011 while I was still in High School, then I went full vegetarian in 2015, until eventually, I reached a point where I knew that I could transition into veganism. You can learn more about that story here.
Following my curiosity through the years and my knack for learning new things, is what helped me turn VeggieJeva into a side business and to start working in food photography. The idea from the beginning was to spread vegan inspiration throughout the island with recipes, restaurant visits, and brand collaborations; but that quickly changed with the passing of Hurricane Maria and when reality hit me. I was a recent B.A. graduate, starting grad school and a new part-time job. Dividing my time and money to create diverse content without going broke was a challenge and even more after the hurricane.
So for a while, I stuck with just making simple recipes, until eventually I hit my first viral recipe and started expanding my work. At first, I debated whether to write in Spanish or English, since here in Puerto Rico we mostly speak Spanish. However, even though I was born & raised here, English is the language that I’m most comfortable communicating in, as well as the Blog quickly grew to become internationally recognized.
Today I get to work as a Social Media Manager & Content Strategist for a local marketing agency, and as a Vegan Blogger, Recipe Developer, Food Stylist & Food Photographer, all from Puerto Rico.
My Food Philosophy
I follow a fully vegan lifestyle and share colorful food recipes to inspire you to eat more plants! I see food as a source of overall wellness and joy, that’s why being creative in the kitchen is my go-to activity as soon as I feel down or a little lost. I am a living example of how veganism can positively affect the body, as over the years I have managed to reverse a pre-diabetes diagnosis.
My intention is not to force people into veganism, but to let them see for themselves, through my story & actions, what veganism can do; physically and mentally. However, I strongly believe everyone should try to eat more plants: once a week, every other day or all the time. So far this method has worked incredibly well with my friends and family.
I believe we all need to eat more from what mother nature gives us and less from a factory. Although you’ll definitely see some processed food from time to time because I’m all about trying new things and not restricting.
Here are a Bunch of Random Facts About Me:
- First: I’m a Leo sun, Pisces moon, and Scorpio ascendant. Meaning that I’m creative, bold, strategic, passionate & extremely dramatic at times.
- I’m a Licensed Psychotherapist.
- My curiosity about veganism started when I was 10 years old and saw for the first time on t.v. Lisa Simpson explaining to her family that she wanted to be a vegetarian.
- Being a budtender (dispensary technician) was my first real job. I worked in the Medical Cannabis Industry in Puerto Rico from the very beginning (2017) up until 2021.
- I love everything that has to do with Cyber-Punk.
- My favorite bands are: Alt-J, Coldplay, and Tame Impala.
- If I went to Hogwarts then I would definitely be in Slytherin; or a mix between Gryffindor and Slytherin.
- I like to travel a lot and my second favorite type of photography is scenery/landscape.
