Who is Shea Brand?

According to their website “Shea Brand is more than skincare. We create artful, minimal-plastic self-care products made in NYC.” They’re a sustainable brand that cares about the environment and is dedicated to protecting and conserving it. When they contacted me, back in August, I was super excited to learn that they don’t test on animals, and provide mostly vegan products. 

And, having a medical cannabis background, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to try their CBD product line. I looked forward to trying these products out for managing my period pain, and I’m happy to say that I was not disappointed. Each of the products feel natural in every way; from look & feel to the packaging

The Products

My favorite: CBD Headache Roller

I get headaches more often than I would like to admit. When I received the package, the CBD Roller was the first thing that I tried, because ironically, I had a headache that day. Let me tell you that this has been a lifesaver! Not only does it aid in controlling the headache in under 20 minutes (or so), but it also smells SO GOOD it also helps me calm down. The combination of CBD, menthol, arnica oil, aloe vera juice, and a blend of essential oils like meadow seed oil, create a fast-acting portable roll-on that delivers soothing effects where I need it most.

Close second: CBD Muscle, Joint and Skin Balm

If the Headache Roller wouldn’t have provided efficient relief, this would’ve been the top 1. The fact that I’ve been able to use this as a massage balm for sore muscles and as joint pain relief after exercise, is incredible. With ingredients like hemp extract, arnica & vitamin E, this balm can help provide deep nourishment/protection to the skin, joints, and muscles. My favorite use has definitely been for back massages.

CBD Full Spectrum Oil Drops

With my medical cannabis background, I was super excited to try this oil tincture and to compare this product with the Hemp CBD products that you can find at dispensaries here on the Island. What I liked the most was that this product doesn’t have any MCT or Palm Oil; most (if not all) of the manufactories here add MCT oil to their CBD tincture. And that’s a big NO for me. I also found the product to be very natural in taste, smell & color; the CBD used is from a  pure omega-rich hemp seed carrier oil, with rich green color and an earthy flavor.

CBD & Electric Daisy Exfoliating Scrub

It’s been such a long time since I’ve found a good scrub that could be used for the face & body. The white willow bark and green tea extract work to brighten and even out skin tone, while volcanic ash exfoliates and cleanses, and the vitamin C & rosehip oil help keep the skin hydrated and balanced. This product is also made with a special plant commonly known as Electric Daisy; when it’s extracts are added to skincare, it can have a powerful tightening effect on the skin (hello natural botox!). And the smell is just incredible!

CBD Transdermal Patch 4 Pack

I was dying to try these patches! Puerto Rico manufacturers have yet to create and sell some CBD/THC transdermal patches. The most useful that I got out of the patches was for period pain relief. Their unique time-release technology provides up to 8 hours of therapeutic effects per day, without the need to dose half-way. Making this a super discrete and effective dosing product.

Holy Basil Hydrosol

Out of all of the products, this one was the one that I was most intrigued by; I had never heard of a hydrosol before. They’re also known as “flower waters,” which are created by distilling fresh leaves, fruits, and flowers. In this case, Holy Basil has healing and soothing properties that provide antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects. I loved using this product as a toner for my face before applying the rest of my skincare/makeup routine.

After the first blog post of this month went up, I got a lot of questions about my makeup products, so I thought it’d be fun to share with you what’s in my beauty bag these days. Plus, it gave me an opportunity to get back to video editing. To be honest, it was kind of hard, I edited videos for fun a couple of years ago, but now software has changed & my equipment too, so it’s kind of like starting over.

Anywho, back to my ethical beauty products…

Okay, so now that we’ve talked about veganism not being only about what we eat, what Ethical Beauty is, and I’ve suggested some products for you to start on your journey, it’s time to talk about what I have in my bag.

Before we start, here is a recap about me, and my skin.

Firstly, the products in my bag need to be cruelty-free, which means that no animal testing has been used throughout any phase of the product’s development. Secondly, they must be vegan, which means no animal-derived ingredients. I’m usually really flexible when it comes to the eco-friendliness of a product.

My skin, well, I’ve never had any major skin issues, no acne (knock on wood), just some blackheads & bumps here & there. I’m grateful for this because it makes choosing skincare & makeup a breeze; yet I’m very conscious that this is not it for many people.

The only problem that I currently have is uneven skin tone, & that this damn humidity makes my combination skin very oily!

That’s why, everything that I’ll share on this post, are products that have worked for me & and my combination skin. This does not mean that these products will work for you. Most of these products I’ve acquired through time; some of them I’ve used them for as long as 4 years, and some of them I’ve been using for as little as 6 months.

How do I choose my products?

I always research the hell out of a brand before purchasing a product, read reviews on different sites and even look for their controversies. So all of the products that you’ll see on that video are from brands that I trust completely and that I’ve been using for a long time.

The first thing you’ll notice? That I don’t have a lot of makeup products! This is my attempt to be as minimalistic as possible with the things that I own. This also helps me stay within budget and to do my make up very quickly in the mornings. Time-saving, money-saving & space-saving! What more can you ask for?

Second, no lipstick? Yup, I rarely use lipstick. So little that I’ve had the same Colour Pop lipstick for 3 years… might be expired tho. The labeling is so worn out that it wasn’t worth photographing, but those lipsticks are the bomb so give them a try.  

Going back to the money topic here, this is another aspect that I look into to when buying Ethical Beauty products. However, this doesn’t mean that I limit myself. I’m a broke Grad School student, that just can’t afford the luxury of buying every single ethical product that comes out. So, when it comes to the economic aspect of my products, well… it’s a mixed bag. I don’t particularly have a preference for high-end products or inexpensive products. I just go with whatever works for my skin, and whatever stays for the long run.

Okay, so you’re vegan or you’re somewhere near to being vegan. When people think vegan they immediately think only of food. The reality? Vegan food it’s just the tip of the iceberg, there are so many other aspects to Veganism that are so easily overlooked.

For example, the beauty & skin care industry. Most commercial products are made with substances that don’t go along the lines of veganism (animals, health, environment). Think about it, your skin is the body’s largest organ, it protects you and keeps you safe. It would only make sense that if you’re keeping your inside organs healthy & clean with veganism, that you do the same with your skin. So what to do? You always want to put the least toxic, least cruel products on your skin because your body soaks it right into the bloodstream.

Today I’m sharing WHY the Ethical Beauty industry is so vital. And I get it, at first it may seem unimportant, it happened to me. But being two years into veganism after making the food changes myself, and learning tons of new information, when I started making these other changes I felt like I wasted a lot of time being ignorant. So I want to bring you all the information so don’t have to waste time like I did.

Disclaimer: Just like there are many aspects to Veganism, there are many aspects to Ethical Beauty that go along the same lines. However, the lines on this topic are still murky, the Ethical Beauty “business” is still in diapers, and there are tons of controversies going on regarding the topic. So I’m going to give you my input, which is MY OPINION, along with my requirements for purchasing a product, my tips on how to start, and why I think this is important.

Animal Testing: NEWSFLASH it’s not “just the lab rats”

Although they are not required by law, several cosmetics tests are performed on mice, rats, rabbits and guinea pigs. At the end of a test, the animals are killed without pain relief by asphyxiation, neck-breaking or decapitation. These tests can include:

• Skin and eye irritation tests where chemicals are rubbed onto the shaved skin or dripped into the eyes of restrained rabbits without any pain relief.
• Repeated force-feeding studies lasting weeks or months to look for signs of general illness or specific health hazards such as cancer or birth defects.
• Widely condemned “lethal dose” tests, in which animals are forced to swallow large amounts of a test chemical to determine the dose that causes death.

“No One Should Have to Sacrifice for Beauty”

When I started changing my skincare & beauty products arsenal, I struggled a lot finding my why’s; I wanted my products to be vegan, cruelty-free & eco-friendly all at once. I quickly realized that this was nearly impossible since this industry is still in diapers. Two months into trying different products I decided that, my number one requirement for purchasing a beauty product: IT HAS TO BE CRUELTY-FREE. Today, this is non-negotiable for me, and it should be for you too.

Coincidently, a lot of brands started jumping in on the Ethical Beauty trend, but many for all the wrong reasons. For example, a certain commercial brand (which I’ll refrain from naming for legal reasons) released at the beginning of last year a line of hair products that were branded as vegan. However, this company is notoriously known for testing animals and branding themselves as a “natural” brand, even though it’s far from being eco-friendly. This was back to when I was starting to change my products, so naturally, when I saw the product branded as vegan at Walgreens I got really excited & bought it. One month in, I came to the conclusion that it made zero sense for a product to be vegan only to still be tested on animals.

“Where do I Start?”: Simple Changes

• Start here: Choose what’s ethically most important to you. Is it for your products to be vegan? For them to be eco-friendly? Or for them to be cruelty-free? Like I said before, for now, there are a handful of companies that make their products check all of those boxes.
• Slowly but surely: You probably didn’t become vegan overnight; definitely, don’t try to change your arsenal of beauty products cold turkey. Do your research, at your own pace. Substitute your products, when they end. Resist your urge to splurge and our wallet will thank you.
• Don’t fall into certifications & fancy words: Just like I mentioned before, companies are jumping on this trend and many for the wrong reasons. “Organic certified, vegan certified, cruelty-free certified, natural certified” those are all words that you might read from just one product. However, most companies practices don’t align with what they’re trying to sell; just like the brand that I mentioned before that sold vegan products but still tested them on animals. There are many small, independent brands with a true passion for their ethics, that can’t afford to certify, but still, use 100% organic ingredients, so it is important to read your labels, research and ask questions.
• One size does not fit all: In the Ethical Beauty Industry you can find amazing products, but you’ll also run into some flops. This will be a process with lots of trial & error. It has taken me a year to finally be comfortable with all the products that I currently have. So be patient, and enjoy the process.

My Advice?

• First thing to go? Lipstick: This is a product that you’ll end up ingesting one way or another. Yes! You’re literally eating it. So why not make it vegan? There are tons of brands out there creating amazing lipsticks with a wide range of shades.
• Hair is next!: Your scalp is more absorbent than the rest of your skin. So it’s really important that when you’re changing your routine and detoxing your body from animal products, to tackle this first. I know this can be hard when you’re used to products for many years. It was for me, but in the end, the only products that worked best for my curly hair were the vegan, cruelty-free & eco-friendly ones.
• Ingredients: Just like you learned (or are still learning) how to read the labels on your food, learn how to read the labels on your beauty

How to Spot Ethical Vegan Products

So, I’ve talked about the importance of Vegan, Cruelty-free & Eco-friendly products. But how does that actually translate? Be aware of the following when looking for your beauty and personal care products:

• Cruelty-free: Products with ingredients that at no stage in their development where tested on animals. However, animal testing is not the only thing that you may want to consider here. Pay attention to where the palm oil in your products come from; this simple ingredient is responsible for the devastation of thousands of hectares of rainforests and consequently all the animals that live in them. So make sure that your palm oil is sustainably certified.
• Vegan: Products that do not contain any animal ingredients. But be aware, shockingly enough, some companies test their vegan products on animals.
• Eco-friendly: Products that are organic, natural and non-GMO, without manufactured herbicides, artificial fertilizers, artificial or synthetic colors, preservatives or chemicals. But be aware, not all eco-friendly products are fully vegan; some may contain egg derivatives or honey.

Whether you already support Ethical Beauty brands or you’re just starting out on your journey, you’ve taken the time and effort to make a positive decision for the good of the environment. The world needs more people like you! Changes like these, as small as they may seem, have a huge positive impact.
